A nice feature of the Cataloguing module is that it checks whether there are any Unicode characters in a record when you upload it.

 

If there ARE Unicode characters in the record then it automatically sets the Character coding scheme in 000/09 to "a" if it isn't already set.

If there are NO Unicode characters in the record then it automatically sets the Character coding scheme in 000/09 to null if it's currently set to "a".
